Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 13 “Fireproof.”

If last week I was “bulletproof” then today I’m “fireproof.” As soon as I heard The National’s new album knew I needed to add one last track to Volume 2 of the Inspiration Playlist.

You’re fireproof
Nothing breaks your heart
You’re fireproof
How’d you get so far?

You’re a needle in the hay
You’re the water at the door
You’re a million miles away
Doesn’t matter anymore

Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 12 “Titanium”

This is one of my current favorite songs. I’ve been pretty much blasting it nonstop, despite the fact I’m at least two years behind when it was popular. I’d actually never heard it until I saw “Pitch Perfect.”

You shout it out,
But I can’t hear a word you say
I’m talking loud not saying much
I’m criticized but all your bullets ricochet
You shoot me down, but I get up

[Chorus:]
I’m bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down but I won’t fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won’t fall
I am titanium

Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 11″Thank You”

Since I’m all about the 90’s angry girl music as of late, this classic Alanis song is perfect for my playlist. Confession: my high school bff and I went to her concert in Seattle last year. Our 15 year-old selves thanked us.

Thank you India
Thank you terror
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you thank you silence

How about me not blaming you for everything
How about me enjoying the moment for once
How about how good it feels to finally forgive you
How about grieving it all one at a time

Warning: Don’t watch the video if you don’t want to see a slightly blurry nude Alanis.

Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 10 “Running Up That Hill”

This wasn’t one of my best weeks. There were a lot of no’s in different  areas of my life. Some were nice no’s, some were not. One no led me to enjoy a cocktail in the sun at 10:45 in the morning. I’ve hit numerous roadblocks with my current WIP and my frustration is at an all time high.

This is why Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” is so perfect. (Sidebar, it’s one of the songs l used to listen to on my long training runs to motivate me back when I was marathoning and half-marathoning).

If I only could, I’d be running up that hill.
If I only could, I’d be running up that hill.”

It doesn’t hurt me.
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know that it doesn’t hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that I’m making?
You, it’s you and me.

Warning: The video is a little weird, unless you’re into modern dance.

Inspiration Playlist, Volume 2, Track 9: “Shot in the Arm”

Summerteeth is one of my all time favorite albums and “Shot in the Arm” is probably the best song on it. It’s catchy as hell, but that last line “What you once were isn’t what you want to be any more” really speaks volumes.

The ashtray says you were up all night

When you went to bed with your darkest mind

You’ve changed

Oh, you’ve changed

What you once were isn’t what you want to be any more

Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 8 “Hold On”

This next song on the playlist is a departure from last week’s, but it’s still pretty awesome. How can any mix not have Tom Waits in it? That would be a crime. Right?

Oh you got to
Hold on, Hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right here
You gotta hold on

Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 7 “I’m Good, I’m Gone”

If you haven’t listened to Lykke Li, you’re seriously missing out. This Sweedish singer-songwriter is wicked adorable and her songs are catchy. This Lykke Li classic from 2008 is actually dedicated to my writing bff who had a pretty rough week and who could probably use an extra dose of inspiration. Hell, I think after this week we could all use some extra inspiration.

Working in the corner, peaking over shoulders, waiting for my time to come.
Working in the corner, one day to the other, butter for my piece of bun.

Stepping a stone and I’m all gone.
Give me the tone and I’m all gone
Yes I’m walking by the line,
Not here but in my mind.
Working a sweat but it’s all good.
Breaking my back but it’s all good.
Cause I know I’ll get it back,
I know your hands will clap.

Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 6 “Success”

Confession time: “Great Expectations” (1998) is one of my favorite films of all time and has one of the best soundtracks. For reals. There are a million gems on there including this Iggy Pop song. Good luck getting it out of your head as success comes rolling in.

Here comes success (here comes success)
Over my hill (over my hill)
Here comes success (here comes success)
Here comes my car (here comes my car)
Here comes my chinese rug (here comes my chinese rug)
Here comes success (here comes success)

In the last ditch (in the last ditch)
I’ll think of you (I’ll think of you)
In the last ditch (in the last ditch)
I will be true (I will be true)

Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 5 “Dare You To Move”

Confession: I have a weakness for Nicolas Sparks books turned into films. It used to be that I had a weakness for Nicholas Sparks books until about 2002 or 2003 when they all started sounding the same. But those early books turned into some fabulous films: “The Notebook,” “Message in a Bottle,” and of course “A Walk to Remember.” I also happen to adore Mandy Moore, which is not quite as embarrassing as watching “The Lucky One” or “Safe Haven” in the theater by myself.

I also absolutely love Switchfoot’s “Dare You to Move,” because it reminds me of the film and gives me all of the feels.  It’s also a pretty motivational song:

Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone’s here
Everyone’s here
Everybody’s watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next
What happens next

[Chorus]
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before

I’m going to stop now before I confess anything else embarrassing like how I still sleep with a baby blanket most nights or that I remembered wetting the bed until I was about eight  or that I’ve never read any of the Harry Potter books (or seen the films).

So with that I leave with you some videos:

Inspiration Playlist Volume 2, Track 4 “Don’t Stop Believin'”

You can’t get any more inspirational than Journey.

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlights people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night.

Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin’ anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

Don’t stop believin’
Hold on to the feelin’
Streetlights people
